FEBRUARY 13th, 2018 - PART III - UPCOMING PROJECTS TO COMPLETE

2018 will be a bit of an ambitious year.  In the years that I haven't been modeling, Ginger and I have bought a business and a camper on property not far away from us - a weekend getaway type of thing.  While the business provides for some time off, we tend to spend a lot of time at our camper, even if just doing the routine maintanence, (mowing lawn, things like that).  This will undoubtably take time away from my newfound surge in returning to modeling, but I hope to use what time I have to get as much done as I can.

THINGS ARE HEATING UP IN THE POD!

There are many projects that need to be completed, that I have left "open" from the last time the layout was set up, May of 2016.  The steel plant itself has a ton of projects on it's own - as it is the single largest complex on the layout, and I'll list those in a separate entry later.  But there are many many other projects that need to be "tightened" up as well, and I intend to discuss them here.

PRECISION WORK SOMETIMES MEANS USING "UNORTHODOX" TECHNIQUES!

THE NEW CEMENT PLANT
THE NEW PLANT OF THE TRAINWORLD UNIVERSAL CEMENT COMPANY

Towards the tail end of 2015/2016, the model of the Trainworld Universal Cement Company was introduced to the layout.  The model now occupies the original spot of Vokovan Sausage and the Mehina Coal and Chemical Company's McQuiston Station.  Vokovan Sausage moved directly across the street while the power plant is going to become part of the cement plant complex.

There are many things yet to be completed on this model.  Another set of silos, seen in the photo above represented by PVC pipe, are yet to be built to match the Universal Atlas Cement Plant prototype at Duluth, which this model is based on and closely resembles.

Some building weathering has begun, but not a lot. A crate bridge crane is a stand in right now for a scratch built crane to be built later. This scratch built bridge crane is sure to be one heckuva job! The accompanying coal yard, which the crane sits in, will also have to be carfefully examined for space and size before built.  A yard crane was hurriedly built but not yet finished.  This should be done this year.

THE POWER PLANT SIDE OF THE CEMENT PLANT COMPLEX

The cement car hoppers will all have to be resprayed and annotated with the T.U.C.C logo, which they havent yet so far.  Also, several Porter Hustlers will be painted to match the T.U.C.C scheme, which is blue and white I believe.

THE CEMENT PLANTS POWER PLANT SIDE MATERIALS YARD AND BRIDGE CRANE, JUST A STAND IN FOR NOW

The biggest part of the cement plant is actually the power plant. A lot of it will have to be scratch built, including transformers, huge power cable towers,  water towers, conveyors and etc.  I've toyed with the idea of adding a small custom built coke plant, but with all the other projects I have going, that is going to be set on the back burner.  I'd love to do it though!  LOTS of work left to do on this part of the complex, but it's coming along.

ROBERT BOYAT HIGH SCHOOL, SURROUNDING SCHOOLS and STADIUM

ROTONDI ELEMENTARY AT LEFT, BOYAT HIGH AT CENTER, BERGMAN JR (NOT IN FRAME)

While the schools appear to, at least, "be there", they are really just slapped together (save for Boyat High's scratch built tower).  Theres a LOT of work left to do to bring these to life.  Rotondi Elementary needs a paint job to turn it from a generic "jail" like building into a school.  On the opposite side, Bergman Jr High, although a tad bit more decorative, is also in the same boat.  These models need some attention.  The high school needs some roof work and a wing addition needs to be cleaned up.  Detailing could be used all around.

BOYAT STADIUM DIAGRAM PROPOSAL

The single largest free based scratch built project I may undertake yet, is the building of the sports stadium complex.  While I have preliminary drawings made up for the stadium, I haven't worked out the details.  This stadium is to take the place of the makeshift "field" that sometimes is seen in shoots.  The idea of the stadium is to have it big enough to be able to swap ot center sections with either a hockey rink, football field, or baseball diamond.  This might be a bit more than I can chew, but I'm going to make an attempt at it.

CHILDRENS MUSEUM OF CAROLINA BASEBALL STADIUM

I've seen some photos of other people's attempts, and given the space that the school area has,  I think that this can be done.  It will be challenging, no doubt about it, but a worthwhile challenge.  I'm not certain I'll get to this project this year, as THIS is a HUGE undertaking, but I'd like to take a shot.

2014 TEST SETUP OF THE OUTDOOR LAYOUT. THIS WAS USED TO PLAN ROADS AND ETC.  NOTE THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT BOTTOM.

The stadium model is a critical piece to the layout for a few reasons.  ONE:  the roads of the layout are not finished near the school for a reason: they are waiting for the stadium to be built AND the neighborhood around it.

TWO:  Once the stadium is built, the rest of the roads can be finished and the neighborhood can be built.  This should essentially, finish the layout.  Once the neighborhood is built, the final touches can be put down to complete the "city".  This includes completing the railroad and highway oeverpass - which has been planned, but was never built.

I HAD ORIGINALLY ENVISIONED  A NEIGHBORHOOD ON A HILL IN THIS 2014 PHOTO.  I STILL PLAN TO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS

The overpass and highway/railroad is intended to run alongside Railton Yard on the side of the hill and connect into a tunnel - (to nowhere in reality, but in fiction this heads towards another city).  These two links are needed to perpetuate that traffic, both rail and cars COME from somewhere!

FURTHER AND CONTINUED DETAILING OF SEVERAL SMALLER BUILDINGS

ISLAND NEWS BUILDING, MOSTLY AN EMPTY SHELL

A lot of the buildings on the layout look finished from afar, yet they are really empty buildings.  Some are missing glass, interiors, even signs.  My hope is that I can spend a bit of time and take some of these buildings and place some advertisements on them, interiors, some further paint or details to make them more believable and come to life.  A lot of the buildings are like this.  The Steel Plant News building, the Island News, Markle Hardware, the Catholic Church is still pretty plain, a lot of the government buildings are pretty generic as well.

BUNDY's SHOES IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF A BUILDING THAT NEEDS SOME MORE CHARACTER

MARKLE HARDWARE AND THE GRISWOLD TRAVEL AGENCY BLDG STILL LACK GLASS AND A LOT OF DETAILS

SIGNS LIKE THOSE IN THE WINDOWS AND ON THE BUILDING OF THE ATLANTIS INN WILL GO A LONG WAY IN ADDING DETAIL

WHILE THE KOKOTOVICH BUILDING HAS MORE CHARACTER, WITH ITS WINDOW SIGNS, IT LACKS AN INTERIOR STILL

MARKLE HARDWARE STILL LOOKS PRETTY BARE AND HAS NO INTERIOR OR GLASS YET

PAINTING SEVERAL NEW LOCOMOTIVES AND ROLLING STOCK

Santa Fe SD-38's in tandem with a TCR GP-9.  These units have yet to be painted to TCR colors.

Theres quite a bit of engines and rolling stock still sitting in the Escape Pod on the shelf awaiting paint, or details.  Painting these will add a lot more "color" to the layout, as it will introduce new companies, flags etc.  Theres also a lot of rolling stock thats been primered for color, but are just still siting in primer.

Among the cars to be modeled and detailed, are several grey coal hoppers and gondolas from the Mallett Mining and MInerals Company, or M3.  This company hauls a lot of limestone and slag to the cement plant and steel plant.

THESE PRIMER GREY HOPPERS WILL EVENTUALLY BE STENCILED UP TO REPRESENT THE MALLETT MINERALS AND MINING CO.

THESE CEMENT HOPPERS WILL BE PRIMERED AND RESTENCILED TO REPRESENT THE TRAINWORLD UNIVERSAL CEMENT CO

Theres a lot of flags that haven't been seen yet, as I haven't gotten around to making them - but  most are minor.   You might see a car or two of them just so you know they are "there", unlike the vast fleet of ore cars from the TCR.

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS: TOUCH UP AND DETAILS

THE GOVERNMENT DISTRICT IN 2016.

The buildings in the government district are very very plain.  Even the Capitol Building and White House are really vanilla and need details.  This is something I hope to accomplish as well. Even little accents go a long ways.  The government district was originally going to be built with several of the Plasticville train stations each representing an "oracle", or "department",  ie; the Dept of Defense, Dept of Treasury and so on.  So far, I haven't gotten very far in that endeavor.

THESE PLASTICVILLE TRAIN STATIONS SERVE AS GOVT BUILDINGS AND THE PLAN IS TO GET A FEW MORE TO ACCENT THE GOVT DISTRICT WITH THESE "ORACLES" AS THEY ARE KNOWN.

THE FRONT DOOR TO THE WHITE HOUSE. THIS ENTIRE AREA, AND MODEL, SCREAM FOR MORE DETAIL!

IT FIGURES
THESE FOOTBALL PLAYERS HAVE ALREADY BEEN ADDED TO THE LAYOUT. MORE FIGURES TO COME!

Good quality figures can make all the difference in a layout, and I made a big effort at the end of 2016 to get quite a few JUST for the steel plant exhibit! I also got some that work for the layout as well.  In addition to these, I've bought a few packs of "generic" figures - ie, background figures.

With these new figures come new characters, which aides in the stories as you follow around the figures on photo shoots.  Some of these new identities have already been planned and thought out, while others will have to wait unitl the time is right to be introduced.

THE MILITARY SECRETS BEHIND THESE MODELS
THE STILL UNFINISHED MODEL OF THE HALF BATTLESHIP/HALF AIRCRAFT CARRIER

As stated in another From the Exacto Knife entry, this model of the half battleship, half aircraft carrier was started as really just a fun scratchbuild in between doing other things.  It wasn't just random - I've had plans for this for a long, long time and it's actually a key part of the Trainworld timeline story - or rather, it WILL be.....but thats hush hush for now.

THIS STRANGE LOOKING JET WAS SEEN FLYING OVER TRAINWORLD CITY....WHAT IS IT BATMAN?!

In the Trainworld storyline, (1954 so far), jet technology is fairly new. The Republic does have a few squadrons of USAF surplus P-80 Shooting Star fighters, but thats it.  So....WHATS THIS JET?  In the newspaper (the Trainworld Tribune) there are increasing reports of UFO's and strange noises, but nobody knows anything.   People see strange things in the sky, but they are all dismissed. Remember, this is the early 1950's.....sci fi is all the rage and jet technology is evolving incredibly fast.  The Red Scare is in full swing.  So, who knows what this is?   The truth SHALL be revealed....eventually.

Both of these models, the plane and the ship ARE related, but sparingly. The stories of both will become a part of the storyline of the Republic.....and the spinoff stories will be even more exciting!

The only hint I'll give involves this building:

ADAMA INDUSTRIES IS AN AIRCRAFT COMPONENT MANUFACTURER THAT MAKES SMALL PLANES AND COMPONENTS FOR THE INDUSTRY.  SO WHATS SO IMPORTANT THAT THE PRIMUS (PRESIDENT) AND A SECURITY TEAM NEED TO BE HERE TODAY?

Lots of things on the plate......more to come later!
